How to Be a Good House Guest

Whether you are visiting someone for an evening or a week, you must know that it is an honor to be invited into someone else’s home. There are many things you can do to ensure you are a good house guest, and that you do not wear out your welcome.

If you are visiting for an evening, such as a dinner event or a get together, make sure you bring an appropriate host/hostess gift. This need not be extravagant; in fact, thoughtful is usually best. For instance, if you you know enough about your host to be aware of their tastes and even hobbies, you can bring something personal that they would love; a nice vegan dish or pastries for that vegetarian, or some scented candles for the romantic. Be sure, though, that you know enough not to offend, such as bringing a meat dish to a vegetarian’s house, or strong scented items ot someone who is allergic. Generally, good gifts are simple, and ideas for hostess gifts include a bottle of wine, a small dessert offering, or a small gift item such as a seasonal bouquet or trinket, presented nicely.

Perhaps you are staying longer-term and were not aware there is etiquette involved. This is not a cut-and-dried issue, as combinations of people are unique, as are reasons for visiting. The main thing is to think about not only how you would like your own house guests to behave should the situation be reversed, but also keep in mind the personality and scheduling needs of your host. For instance, if your host is very harried, be gracious and offer to spend some time on your own so they are sure to have time for their own needs without worrying about you. Getting out in a new locale and exploring is a great thing to do alone, and will provide you with many adventures and memories. Just be sure you know what is safe locally and what isn’t.

No matter how long or short the visit, if you have kids or pets be sure they behave well whenever possible. If there is commotion that seems to be stressing your host, try taking it outside to give them a break. Also, inject humor where possible to keep things light and reduce the stress load of having guests – keep it light! Even if you are visiting someone sick or for bereavement purposes, everyone needs a smile.
